Collection

Patient Preparation:

  • Throat:
    • Insert swab to throat making contact with both tonsils and posterior pharyngeal wall.
    • Avoid making contact with inside of cheeks or tongue.
  • Rectal:
    • Insert swab into the rectum past the anal margin ( the outside of the anus) and rotate the swab 5-10 times. 
    • Avoid making contact with skin during insertion and removal of swab.

Specimen Type:

  • Throat or rectal swab collection with Aptima Multiswab Collection Kit. (Orange)  

Minimum Volume:

  • Aptima urogenital swab: Entire Swab.

Reject Due To:

  • Specimen tube with no swab.

  • Specimen does not meet collection, storage, or transport requirements.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 7 days.

Refrigerated: 7 days.

Frozen: Unacceptable
