Patient Preparation

  1. Insert swab into nostril going straight back (not upward) for several centimeters until reaching nasopharynx (resistance will be met).
  2. Gently rotate swab inside nasopharynx multiple times (5-10 seconds).
  3. Remove swab and place into proper media

Specimen Type

Preferred: Any Viral or Universal Transport Medium  

Acceptable: eSwab Liquid Amies medium .

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 4 hours.

Refrigerated: 3 days. (Preferred)

Frozen: Unacceptable.
