Collection

Patient Preparation:

  • Standard blood collection procedure.

Specimen Type:

  • Light Blue (Citrate)
  • Promptly after collection, spin down and place 1 mL of platelet-poor plasma in plastic vial. (Glass vial is not acceptable.) Freeze imediately at ≤ -40° C, if possible
    • Platelet poor plasma: 
      • Centrifuge, transfer top 3/4 of plasma into a plastic vial, and centrifuge plasma again.

      •  Aliquot top 3/4 plasma into a separate plastic vial, using this for testing. Discard the vial with the remaining plasma.

      • Double-centrifuged specimen is critical for accurate results as platelet contamination may cause spurious results.

Minimum Volume:

  • 0.5mL

Reasons for Rejection:

  • Hemolyzed or lipemic specimens, or does not meet collection, storage, or transport requirements.

Stability

  • Ambient: 8 hours.
  • Refrigerated: Not acceptable.
  • Frozen: 30 days. (Preferred)
