Patient Preparation:

  • Aseptic techniques must be used in obtaining and transporting specimen.

Specimen Type:

  • Preferred: Varied sources collected in a sterile container
  • Acceptable: Varied sources collected in Copan eSwab (Not encouraged)

  • Bone marrow:
    • Sodium heparin (Green, no gel) (Preferred)
    • Red (No Additives) (Acceptable)

Minimum Volume:

  • 1mL
  • eSwab: entire swab

Reject Due To:

  • Dry specimen, leaking container, inadequate volume of sputum or fluid specimen. Specimens in a non-sterile container, or does not meet collection, storage, or transport requirements.

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours (eSwab 48 hours)

Refrigerated: 24 hours (eSwab 48 hours) (Preferred)

Frozen: Unacceptable

  • Spinal fluid kept at room temperature.
  • Dermatological specimens kept at room temperature.
