Patient Preparation:

               Aseptic techniques must be used in obtaining and transporting specimen.

Specimen Type:

Preferred: Varied sources collected in a sterile container

Acceptable: Varied sources collected in Copan eSwab (Not encouraged)

Minimum Volume:

1mL

eSwab: entire swab

Reasons for Rejection:

Dry specimen, leaking container, inadequate volume of sputum or fluid specimen. Specimens in a non-sterile container, or does not meet collection, storage, or transport requirements.

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours (eSwab 48 hours)

Refrigerated: 24 hours (eSwab 48 hours) (Preferred)

Frozen: Unacceptable

  • Spinal fluid kept at room temperature.
  • Dermatological specimens kept at room temperature.
