Important Note

  • Sources required on patient label and in order.
  • Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture.
  • First morning specimens yield highest bacterial counts from overnight incubation in the bladdar and are the best specimens. 
  • If yeast is suspected, also order LAB 2165 Culture, Yeast.
  • One specimen per patient per day is recommended. More than two specimens per patient per day will not be processed.

Patient Preparation:

Aseptic techniques must be used in obtaining and transporting specimen.

Specimen Type:

Any non-dirty/first catch urine collection specimens.

BD Vacutainer C&S Preservative Tube (Boric Acid) (Preferred)

Sterile Container (Acceptable)

Minimum Volume:

Sterile Container: 0.5mL

BD Vacutainer: 4mL (line delineated on collection tube)

Reasons for Rejection:

Vacutainer tube underfilled, specimen collected in improper container or does not meet collection, storage, or transport requirements.

Stability

Ambient:

Sterile Container: 2 hours

BD Vacutainer: 48 hours

Refrigerated: 

Sterile Container: 24 hours (Preferred)

BD Vacutainer: 48 hours (Preferred)

Frozen: Unacceptable
