SPECIMEN COLLECTION

Sample Type

Body fluid, Fine Needle Aspiration, brushings, or urine.

Specimen Required

Fresh

Prepared smears must be placed into 95% alcohol immediately.

Air dried smears must be completely dry before sending to lab.

Unacceptable Conditions

All specimens must be labeled with the patients name and at least one additional unique identifier (DOB, MRN).

The specimen container must also be labeled with the anatomic site/specimen source.

Specimens must be submitted with the EPIC requisition which must

match the specimen container information.

Specimen Stability

Specimen submitted in original container requires refrigeration. These specimens must be delivered to the laboratory immediately or refrigerated until transport.

For prepared smears, fix alcohol fixed slides immediately in 95% alcohol and submit to the lab.
