Patient Preparation:

Aseptic techniques must be used in obtaining and transporting specimen.

Specimen Type:

Sputum, bronchial, tracheal specimens collected in a sterile container.

eSwab acceptable for sinus cultures.

Minimum Volume:

1mL

Reasons for Rejection:

Sputum specimens rejected after Gram stain is read by technologist detecting saliva in sample.

Non-sterile container or does not meet collection, storage, or transport requirements.

Stability

Ambient: 2 hours sterile container (24 hours eSwab)

Refrigerated: 24 hours (Preferred)

Frozen: Unacceptable
