Important Note

Indicate collection site/source and collection time on all specimen containers.

Culture, Gram Stain, and PCR only performed if vials are indicated as positive on BD Bactec FX instrument.

Suboptimal draws (<10 total mL per draw or line draws) must have a "Suboptimal Form" filled out and signed off on by patients primary care team and sent to the lab with the specimen. (Contact laboratory staff for suboptimal form.)

Standard sterilization techniques for both patient and bottles before drawing.

Specimen Type

BD Bactec Plus Aerobic/F Culture Vial. (Blue) 

BD Bactec Lytic/10 Anaerobic/F Culture Vial. (Purple)

BD Bactec Peds Plus/F Culture Vial. (Pink/silver) 

Volume:

  • Aerobic and Anaerobic vials: 8-10mL per bottle.
  • Peds vials: 1-5mL per bottle.

Peds bottles only drawn on patients 18 years or younger.

Specimen Stability

Ambient: 24 hours before put on instrument.

Refrigerated: 24 hours before put on instrument.

Frozen: Unacceptable.

Minimum Volume

Aerobic and Anaerobic vials: 3mL per bottle.

Peds vials: 0.5mL per bottle.

Reference Range

No Growth 6 Days.
